Creating a Design Brief for Your Interior Designer

A design brief tells your interior designer about what you like, want and expect to happen in regard to a renovation type project in your home. They will then use this information as the foundation from which they will then research and develop a highly specific project plan which details the work that will be done.

What to Include in Your Design Brief

Even if you are meeting with your interior designer to discuss your ideas and wishes, having a written plan is still incredibly helpful. We find many of our clients like to refer to photos and colour swatches they have found online through Pinterest for example, so feel free to include images, product brochures and even your own drawings too.

When writing your design brief, remember your designer needs to understand the big picture about the spaces you are wanting remodelled. This includes details about your family, how you use that space, your home likes and dislikes, and your overall vision for your home. We also suggest including information about:

  • Design preferences – do you like wide open spaces or cosy nooks? Do you like modern or traditional design features? Are you a minimalist or do you need lots of extra storage?

  • Colour preferences – do you like a white and neutral palette, or are you fond of bright or pastel colours? Any particular colours you like/dislike?

  • Material preferences – what materials do you like, such as stone, tiles and fabric type? Do you want to use sustainable materials?

  • Budget – what is your budget?

  • Timeframe – when are you wanting your project done and completed by?

  • Usage – who and how will you be using these spaces?

  • Vision – what do you see the completed project looking and feeling like?

  • Supporting photos – do you have a Pinterest board of your thoughts and ideas for this project? Any product brochures or website links to share? Colour or fabric swatches?

Your interior design team will then take the information you have provided and develop a comprehensive plan of your project. You will of course be able to ask for any changes or additions to be made. One of our key offerings is that together with our interior design services, we also can provide furniture packages or make recommendations on furniture for your updated spaces too.
