Clever Storage Ideas for Small Spaces

Architects of modern small houses and apartments often have smart storage ideas which they integrate into the design. But what if your home doesn’t have any? As interior designers, we’re often asked to identify ways to provide our clients with additional storage ideas. Today we’re sharing six of them with you.

6 Storage Ideas for Small Houses & Apartments

You only need to watch house building TV programmes or open a home décor magazine to see the never-ending number of storage options available for homeowners.  But what about storage for small spaces? Can your home be organised and free from clutter without large cupboards or chests?

Yes! We regularly help clients throughout Auckland identify storage ideas for small spaces. Here are six solutions to consider for your home:

  1. Shelf headboards – combining two pieces of furniture into one is a great way to maximise space. Having built-in shelves within the headboard allows you space to store books and other accessories without cluttering up bedside tables.

  2. Baskets – there are so many different options when it comes to baskets. Consider buying large soft sided woven baskets to store items in and place in wardrobes or on shelving. They not only look good but keep things together too.

  3. Above the door bookshelves – the areas above doorways are usually left bare. Why not add some fixed book shelving above the doorway to make use of this space?

  4. Raised bed – raising the height of a bed with a taller base with built-in drawers is one of our favourite storage ideas. It makes the bed appear more prominent, so if perfect for showcasing your favourite bed linen or throw.

  5. Hanging laundry hamper – rather than a laundry hamper taking up space on the floor in your bedroom or bathroom, hang a hamper behind your door instead. Don’t just stop with a hanging laundry hamper – yoga mats, handbags and even jewellery can be hung behind cupboard or wardrobe doors to gain excess space.

  6. Floating furniture – this is not so much a way to increase storage space, but rather to create the perception of space. Being able to see underneath a piece of furniture fixed to the wall opens the space visually. But you could even use the underneath for storage if required.
