As interior designers, we feel decorating with houseplants helps improve the ambience and usability of a room. Many of our Auckland based home staging and home styling clients comment on the impact that a few carefully chosen and positioned houseplants have in their properties. Today we’re sharing some of our interior design tips on using houseplants to decorate and accessorise your home.

6 Tips on Decorating with Houseplants

From stress reduction, improved air quality, increased productivity and reduced background noise, decorating with houseplants offers many benefits. Like with all interior design, the introduction of houseplants requires a considered approach. This includes the colours of the foliage, size of the plant, its preferred environmental conditions and the type of foliage it has. Having a written plan which sets out the types of houseplants, along with their location is key. To help you create one, we’ve put together a list of six tips on how to best decorate your home with houseplants:

  1. Use different sized plants – uniform-sized plants are not what you are looking for here. Instead, group plants together which have different heights and widths for a more natural appearance.

  2. Consider the planter containers and pots – like with other home décor accessories, choose containers which are of an appropriate size, colour and texture to suit the room they are residing in.

  3. Think about the job of the plant – do you want the plant to be a focal point, hide an unattractive feature or blend seamlessly into the background? These answers will help you select the right type, shape and coloured houseplant, as well as the container it is displayed in.

  4. Houseplant location plays an important role – a plant placed on the floor will be seen from a different viewpoint than one at table height. Consider placing your pot plants at different levels to attract attention and compliment a space. A plant holding ladder would be useful to hold herbs on the kitchen bench, for instance.

  5. Living wall – for an eye-catching feature, a living wall can help bring the outdoors in, ideal for Auckland’s apartments and townhouses complementing a cohesive furniture packages. For help in planning and installing a living wall, get in touch with our finer team of home stylists today.

  6. Plant usage – do you want the plants to perform a specific role? For instance, herbs are a functional edible addition to a kitchen, while humidity loving ferns can help with reducing excess bathroom condensation.

Thank you Gaby, I absolutely love the home staging. It came out better than I imagined. Some homes look overly staged and can be overpowering but your style has lightness and an exquisite detail (you even imagined to impress my husband).
