Our Best 14 Decluttering Tips
Whether you are getting your home ready to sell, are considering a renovation or wanting to spring clean, these 14 decluttering tips are just what you need.
Start small – focus on one cupboard or wardrobe first. Once you’ve decluttered, you’ll get a great sense of satisfaction!
Use the 90/90 rule – if you haven’t used something for 90 days and will not use it in the next 90 days, out it goes.
Would you buy it now? – ask yourself if the item is something you would buy again. If so, keep, and if not, out it goes.
10% method – try to cull 10% of a group of things, such as 10% of your kitchen pans. Great if you find it hard to remove items.
Think about the money – if the items you declutter are in good condition, sell them and enjoy the money you will receive.
Clear the flat surfaces – remove the clutter from the top of all flat surfaces, such as benches and tables. If they can’t store away, then off they go.
Focus on one room at a time – it can be easier to tackle one room and cross it off your list, than all at once. Ideal to reduce levels of procrastination.
Use a checklist – keep on task by following your decluttering checklist. Each week, add a few tasks to your to-do list to keep things manageable.
Think about storage space – do you need to have additional inbuilt storage added? Are you using your existing storage space wisely?
Hooks are your friends – add hooks to the inside of cupboards and you’ve gained yourself additional storage space for clothing or hats.
Remember your walking space – having a spacious looking room requires careful furniture placement. When we stage a property, we ensure there is adequate walking space between pieces, as well as furniture which is appropriately sized.
Set a timer – reduce the overwhelm by setting a timer for short intervals. This will help you feel that you are doing a much more manageable job.
Get a second opinion – ask your partner or family member to help you identify items that you can declutter. A second pair of eyes without the sentimentality can be very useful.
Take a photo – once you have finished tidying a room or even your wardrobe, take a photo to help remind you what it looks like. Then you can use this photo to help you identify what it looked like clean, what you have since added and where things go.
